Air dust content and the particle size distribution vary widely and depend on climatic conditions, soil type, road conditions, traffic intensity, etc. The abrasive properties of dust depend mainly on its mineralogical properties and the percentage of quartz and corundum particles in it, which have higher hardness and cause the most intense wear of engine parts.
Quartz is the most common mineral in nature, and it is significantly superior in hardness to the base metals used in engine construction. Therefore, it is entirely justified that special attention should be paid to the quality of filter cells used for air purification and protection of the engine against direct penetration of abrasive particles of road dust into it.
